Rule of Thirds

September 30, 2009

thumbwebThe Rule of Thirds is a compositional tool used to help photographers take more interesting photos by putting the main focus of the photograph off to the side. Instead of putting the main focus all the way in the center, the Rule of Thirds has you put the main focus one thirds of the way in to the picture plane. Horizon lines and strong vertical lines also should be positioned one third of way into the photograph.

This photography is a good example of the Rule of Thirds because Mrs. Blakeney is off to the side. Having the main subject (Mrs. Blakeney) off to the side allows the viewer to see more of the background, causing the viewers eyes to wander around the photograph…

The dramatic use of scale also makes this photograph interesting… Mrs. Blakeney looks like a little Thumbelina next to the big huge leaves.
